Located in northern Alcona, scenic Hubbard Lake is on of Michigan’s largest inland lakes. It was named for Dr. Bela Hubbard, who, along with Dr. Douglass Houghton, first surveyed the area in 1850. Then a strategic military location for Indians because of the high ground at the lake’s southern end, it soon changed into a prime lumbering area. The source of the South Branch of the Thunder Bay River, a dam built here helped regulate the flow of timber to Lake Huron at Alpena. Shortly afterwards, settler Austin Backus built a hotel on the south side, (now Backus Beach) which helped make the area a popular resort. Since then, the lake has seen tremendous growth - today it has become a prime resort area, retirement spot and real estate investment opportunity. The lake’s widest point stretches 7 miles from North Bay to Backus Beach - spanning the area of three townships: Caledonia, Alcona, and Hawes (These spacious waters once attracted hydroplane designer/racer Les Stoddiker here to research craft design and durability before the final runs at Great Salt Flats). A small town named Hubbard Lake can also be found one mile north of the lake, just over the border into Alpena County’s Ossineke Twp.
